What Happens at a Cleaning and Exam

  1. Health review: we go over your medical history, medications and any concerns you have noticed.
  2. Exam: Dr. Evan Baker checks your teeth, gums and bite for decay, gum disease and worn or broken fillings.
  3. X-rays when needed: digital X-rays show problems between teeth and below the gumline that are not visible during the exam.
  4. Oral cancer screening: a quick check of your tongue, cheeks and throat for anything unusual.
  5. Cleaning: your hygienist removes plaque and tartar along the gumline and between teeth, then polishes and flosses.
  6. Home care tips: we point out areas that need extra attention and show you easier ways to brush and floss them.
  7. Next steps: if anything needs treatment, we explain your options and costs before scheduling.

How Often Should You Get a Cleaning?

Most patients do well with a cleaning and exam every six months. You may need to come in more often if you have a history of gum disease, a high rate of cavities, or health conditions that affect your gums. Patients with dentures still need regular exams so we can check the fit and look for changes in the gums and soft tissues.

Signs You Should Not Wait for Your Next Cleaning

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Teeth that feel loose or sensitive
  • A sore or patch in your mouth that has not healed in two weeks

If you have severe pain, swelling or a broken tooth, see our emergency dentistry page or call us right away.

Preventive Care for Kids

Children benefit from the same routine visits, plus fluoride and dental sealants when they are recommended. Families can schedule several members on the same day. Learn more about our pediatric and family dentistry.

Comfortable Care for Anxious Patients

If it has been years since your last cleaning, you are not alone and you will not be judged. We go at your pace, explain each step and stop whenever you need a break. Patients with significant anxiety can ask about sedation options.

Insurance and Payment

Many dental plans cover routine cleanings and exams. Call our office with your insurance information and we will help you understand your benefits. Visit our patient information page to prepare for your first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

Most people feel only mild pressure and some scraping sounds. If your gums are sensitive or you have a lot of tartar buildup, let your hygienist know and we can adjust the pace or numb sensitive areas.

How long does a cleaning and exam take?

A routine visit usually takes about an hour. A first visit with a full set of X-rays may take a little longer.

Do I need X-rays at every visit?

No. Dr. Baker recommends X-rays based on your age, history and risk of decay, not on a fixed schedule for everyone.

It has been years since my last cleaning. Is that a problem?

Not at all. We will start with an exam to see where things stand. Some patients need a more thorough first cleaning or an extra visit, and we will explain why before we begin.
